ChatGPT starter kit

ChatGPT is a chat product first — but with custom instructions and a repeatable checking step, it can run a small, regular workflow for you. This kit sets that up.

Prerequisites

Setup, step by step

  1. Create or sign in to your account. Go to ChatGPT on the web or in a supported app, and sign in. OpenAI's Help Center describes the sign-in route for account and subscription management as: log in, click your profile icon, and open Settings.
  2. Decide whether to pay. Plus is $20/month, billed monthly, with broader model and tool access than Free; OpenAI's Help Center says Plus has no annual plan. Pro comes in three monthly tiers — Pro 100 $100, Pro 200 $200, Pro 500 $500 — billed monthly, with no annual billing or multi-month prepayment. Start on Free, and upgrade only when you can name a limit you keep hitting.
  3. Set custom instructions. Custom instructions tell ChatGPT what it should know about you and how it should respond, and they apply to new conversations until you change, disable, or remove them. They are available on all plans, on web, desktop, iOS, and Android. On web and desktop:
    1. Open Settings, select Personalization.
    2. Make sure Enable customization is toggled ON.
    3. Enter your instructions in the Custom Instructions field.
On iOS and Android, the same setting lives under Settings → Customize ChatGPT, with Enable customization toggled ON. Character limits, per OpenAI's Help Center: Free and Go users can save up to 1,500 characters; Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education users can save up to 5,000 characters.
  4. Write short instructions, not an essay. A useful first version fits in a few lines: your role, the tone you want, and one rule about checking. For example: “I run a three-person support team. Keep answers short, use bullet points, and never invent numbers — if a figure is not in the text I pasted, say so.”

First task walkthrough: a weekly workflow

  1. Pick the workflow. Example: a weekly summary of support notes. Keep it to one job, done the same way each week.
  2. Paste the brief, not just the question. Use the brief builder on this site (task, audience, constraints, what good looks like, what to check) and paste the result into a new chat, followed by the material to work from.
  3. Ask for the output in a checkable shape. For example: “Three sections — top issues, counts, and one suggested fix each. Show each count next to the note it came from.”
  4. Check before using. Verify every number against the material you pasted, and every claim that sounds like a fact against its source. If a count has no visible source in the answer, treat it as unverified and ask where it came from — or re-do that part yourself.
  5. Save what worked. When a workflow produces a good result twice, fold the wording that made it work into your custom instructions, so the next run starts from it.

Omitted, with reason: custom GPT creation steps — this kit deliberately uses custom instructions instead. No OpenAI Help Center page on creating GPTs was fetched this run, and third-party summaries fetched this run disagreed about GPT availability and retirement timing, so no GPT creation command or timeline is stated here. If you already use a GPT, check OpenAI's current GPT guidance inside your own account before building a workflow on it. Also omitted: ChatGPT Go pricing — no OpenAI Help Center Go price page was fetched this run, so no Go price is stated. Business/Enterprise pricing — team plans with per-seat pricing are outside a personal starter kit.
