neondatabase/mcp-server-neon — install for Claude Code

github.com/neondatabase/mcp-server-neon · MCP server · Neon Postgres databases

What it does

Neon's MCP server lets an agent manage Neon (Lakebase) Postgres databases in natural language: creating projects and branches, running queries and performing migrations, as described in the repo README. The hosted server's tool categories include projects, branches, endpoints, querying and schema.

The README carries a plain security warning of its own: the server grants powerful database management capabilities, actions should be reviewed and authorized before execution, and it is intended for local development and IDE integrations, not production use. That warning is repeated here because it is the most important fact on the page.

Install

Quick setup (verified against the repo README's Setting up section — works with Cursor, VS Code and Claude Code, and authenticates via OAuth):

npx neon@latest init

Remote hosted server, OAuth (same README):

npx add-mcp "https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp?category=projects&category=branches&category=endpoints&category=querying&category=schema"

Prerequisites from the README: an MCP client, a Neon account and Node.js 18 or newer.

Verified against github.com/neondatabase/mcp-server-neon (README, Setting up), 2026-10-23.

Trust score: not scored

No score is given for this page. This is a hosted server, and the server source was not fully read in this pass, so a scored review would not be honest. What was checked is listed under Verification below. The README's own production-use warning above stands regardless of any score.

Verification

Checked 2026-10-23 against the author's own repository. No install was run and no account was connected for this check.

What was checked: Author README (description, features, security warning, prerequisites, Option 1 quick setup, Option 2 remote hosted server) was read from a fresh clone of the repo. The hosted service itself and the server source code were not fully reviewed.

Limits: Install commands checked against the author README; not executed in this pass, and no Neon account was connected. No full code read was done, so no trust score is given.
