bmad-code-org/BMAD-METHOD — install for coding tools

github.com/bmad-code-org/BMAD-METHOD · agile method for AI-driven development · agents, workflows and document templates

What it does

BMad Method is a way of running software work with an agent that keeps the thinking visible: what to build, how it holds together, and how it changes as you learn. The README describes it as agile AI-driven development — decisions stay explicit and carry forward as context, instead of being re-explained in every chat. Small changes go straight to building; larger work gets deeper planning first. The delivery loop starts at clarifying a vague idea, planning a clear one, or building a small change, then learning from the result and looping back to planning.

It ships as skills for coding tools, covering roles and steps such as analysis, product management, architecture, development, UX design, code review, and retrospectives — for example the bmad-build, bmad-prd, bmad-architecture, bmad-code-review and bmad-retrospective skills — plus document templates for product requirements, architecture, user stories and test plans. It works on new projects and on codebases you inherited, and the method is free and open source, with no paywalled workflows, according to the README.

Install

Stable release (v6.12) (verified against the repo README's Start Building section): with Node.js 20.12+, Python 3.10+ and uv installed, run this in your project:

npx bmad-method install

Then open the project in your AI coding tool, invoke bmad-build with what you want to change, and run bmad-help whenever you want guidance on what comes next. The README says the stable line is frozen aside from bug fixes.

A preview of v7 also exists on the main branch, installed as skills with npx skills add bmad-code-org/BMAD-METHOD --skill '*' or through the bmad-code-org/bmad-plugins marketplace in Claude Code or Codex. The README warns that the preview changes often and may break between updates, so the stable install above is the one to start with unless you are comfortable keeping up with changes.

Trust score: not scored

No score is given for this page. The skills folder holds many skill directories, and those instruction files were not fully read in this pass, so a scored review would not be honest. What was checked is listed under Verification below.

Verification

Checked 2026-10-24 against the author's own repository. No install was run and no account was connected for this check.

What was checked: Author README (Start Building, stable and preview install routes, delivery loop, ecosystem and documentation sections) and the skills/ directory listing were read from a fresh clone of the repo. Install commands on this page are copied from the README's stable section.

Limits: Install commands checked against the author README; not executed in this pass. Individual skill files were not read in full, so no trust score is given. The preview route changes often by the author's own warning and was not tested here.
